What is panic disorder therapy?

Panic disorder therapy is designed to help individuals who experience sudden and intense episodes of fear, often accompanied by physical symptoms such as heart palpitations, sweating, or dizziness. At Happy Autumn Counseling, we offer evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and exposure therapy to help you manage and reduce panic attacks, gain control over your thoughts, and build healthier coping mechanisms.

Most common symptoms of panic disorder

Panic disorder can be overwhelming, and its symptoms may vary from person to person. Some common signs include:

- Sudden, intense episodes of fear or discomfort

- Physical symptoms like chest pain, dizziness, or shortness of breath

- Fear of losing control or "going crazy"

- Avoidance of places or situations where attacks have occurred

- Constant worry about the next panic attack

How do I know if I have panic disorder?

It’s normal to feel anxious sometimes, but panic disorder goes beyond occasional nervousness. If you find yourself avoiding activities, places, or situations due to the fear of having a panic attack, or if these attacks are recurring and unexpected, it may be more than typical anxiety. It’s important to seek help if these feelings are affecting your daily life, relationships, or ability to function.

How we treat panic disorder in Dallas, Texas

At Happy Autumn Counseling, we treat panic disorder with a compassionate and evidence-based approach tailored to help you regain control over your life. Our method often involves Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which focuses on recognizing and reshaping the negative thought patterns and fears that can trigger panic attacks. We work collaboratively to create healthier coping strategies that decrease anxiety and prevent future episodes. Additionally, we utilize exposure therapy, gradually and safely introducing you to anxiety-provoking situations, which helps build resilience and diminish the fear tied to these triggers. Mindfulness practices are also integral to our approach, as we teach techniques to help you remain present and calm, reducing the intensity of your symptoms and promoting a sense of peace.

FAQs

How to stop panic attacks forever?

Stopping panic attacks permanently may require therapy and practice. CBT and exposure therapy are effective methods for managing and reducing the frequency of panic attacks.

What is the best medicine for panic attacks?

Medication options for panic attacks may include SSRIs or benzodiazepines, prescribed by a healthcare professional. Therapy often accompanies medication for best results.

Panic attack vs anxiety attack?

While both panic attacks and anxiety attacks involve intense emotional and physical reactions, they differ in how they manifest and what triggers them. Panic attacks typically come on suddenly and without an obvious cause, causing intense and overwhelming fear or a sense of impending doom. They often include physical symptoms such as a racing heart, shortness of breath, chest pain, dizziness, or a feeling of losing control, and these symptoms usually peak within minutes.

In contrast, anxiety attacks are usually tied to a specific stressor or situation and tend to build gradually over time. The symptoms of anxiety attacks can include restlessness, increased heart rate, muscle tension, and worry, but they are generally less intense than those experienced during a panic attack. Unlike panic attacks, anxiety attacks are often associated with ongoing anxiety and can persist for a more extended period. Understanding these distinctions can help you recognize what you’re experiencing and seek the appropriate treatment and support.

Are panic disorders curable?

While panic disorders may not be "cured," they can be effectively managed with therapy and sometimes medication, allowing individuals to lead a fulfilling life.

What causes panic disorder?

Panic disorder may be linked to genetics, stress, or changes in brain function. Therapy can help identify and manage these underlying causes.
