FAQs

  • What is a substance abuse evaluation?

A Substance Abuse Evaluation is a comprehensive process that helps identify if someone’s alcohol or drug use is causing problems in their life. It helps determine if the person’s substance use falls into one of three categories: social use, abuse, or dependence. The evaluation provides insights into the severity of the substance use and guides treatment recommendations to help individuals regain control over their life.

  • What is your fee for a substance abuse evaluation and do you accept insurance?

The fee for a Substance Abuse Evaluation is $300 for a 90-minute session. Please note that insurance does not typically cover evaluations, but we can provide a receipt for out-of-network reimbursement. Payment is required at the time of service, and we kindly ask for a card to be kept on file for your convenience.

  • What questions are asked in a substance abuse evaluation?

During the evaluation, we will ask questions about your substance use history, including how often you use, the amounts, and if you've experienced any negative consequences in your life (e.g., work, family, health). We also explore your mental health, family dynamics, medical history, and any legal matters to get a clear picture of your situation.

  • What does a substance abuse evaluation consist of?

A Substance Abuse Evaluation involves an in-depth, face-to-face meeting where we gather personal information such as your substance use patterns, mental health, legal issues, family history, and more. We also use validated screening tools to assess the extent of your use and determine if a diagnosis of substance abuse or dependence is necessary. Afterward, we'll discuss your results and provide treatment recommendations tailored to your unique needs.

  • How do I know if I need a substance abuse evaluation?

If you find yourself struggling to control substance use, experiencing negative consequences like strained relationships, poor work performance, or health problems, or if you feel unable to stop using substances despite wanting to, it's time to consider an evaluation. Even if you’re unsure, talking to a professional can help you gain clarity on your situation.

  • How do I help someone with substance abuse issues?

Supporting someone with substance abuse issues can be challenging but impactful. Encourage them to seek professional help and show empathy without enabling their behavior. Educate yourself about addiction and treatment options, and help them stay engaged in therapy and support groups. Setting healthy boundaries is essential for both parties.

  • How long does a substance abuse evaluation take?

Typically, a substance abuse evaluation lasts 90 minutes. However, some cases might require a follow-up session, especially when there is a need for further information or in-depth exploration.

  • Can a substance abuse evaluation help in legal situations?

Yes, a Substance Abuse Evaluation is often required in legal situations such as DUI cases, custody disputes, or criminal charges related to substance use. It helps provide an objective, professional assessment of the individual’s substance use and can be used in court to guide decisions regarding treatment and legal outcomes.

  • How do I know if I have a substance abuse problem?

If you feel unable to control your use of substances, experience negative impacts on your personal or professional life, or find yourself using substances to cope with emotions or stress, it's a good sign that you may need an evaluation. Reaching out for professional help is the first step toward understanding and addressing your challenges.
