What is trauma therapy?

Trauma therapy is a form of treatment designed to help individuals process and heal from traumatic experiences. Trauma can come from many sources, including physical or emotional abuse, accidents, or life-altering events. Therapy helps to reduce the emotional and psychological impact of trauma, using approaches like Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and other evidence-based techniques to support healing and recovery.

Most common symptoms of trauma

Trauma can manifest in a variety of ways, and its symptoms can differ from person to person. Here are some common signs that may indicate unresolved trauma:

- Flashbacks or intrusive memories of the traumatic event

- Difficulty sleeping or experiencing frequent nightmares

- Hypervigilance or feeling constantly "on edge"

- Emotional numbness or detachment from others

- Avoiding places, people, or situations that remind you of the trauma

- Anxiety, depression, or mood swings

How do I know if I have trauma?

If you've experienced a distressing event and find it difficult to move past it—whether that’s through recurring thoughts, emotional reactions, or avoidance behaviors—you may be dealing with trauma. Trauma can significantly impact your mental and emotional health, making it hard to engage in everyday life. If these feelings persist or worsen over time, it may be time to seek trauma therapy.

Is EMDR effective online?

Yes, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy can be effective in an online setting. Many therapists have adapted EMDR for telehealth, allowing clients to receive treatment remotely. Research and clinical practice have shown positive results with virtual EMDR, although it may depend on the individual client and therapist's comfort with the online format.

Bilateral Stimulation (BLS): In virtual EMDR, therapists can guide clients through bilateral stimulation using visual cues, auditory tones, or tactile methods like tapping. This can be done by tracking movements on the screen or using apps that provide BLS.
As with in-person therapy, clients undergo careful preparation to ensure they feel safe and supported throughout the process. Online platforms still allow for rapport-building and stabilization techniques.

Some clients feel more comfortable working through traumatic memories from their own home, which can be an advantage in virtual therapy. We use specialized tools (like light bars, apps, or simple on-screen cues) to facilitate the same processes used in in-person sessions.

One of the key benefits of online therapy is its flexibility and accessibility. Whether you're in Dallas or anywhere in Texas, you can receive professional trauma therapy from the comfort of your home. Online therapy allows you to fit sessions into your schedule more easily, removing the need for travel and offering a safe space where you can focus entirely on your healing journey.
